To meet changing customer expectations, and to address a more competitive landscape, including the rise of FinTech, Banks and Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) in India have taken advantage of rapid changes in technology for kick starting their digital transformation journey. However, offering digitized, automated and multi-channel loan operations will soon become fundamental for survival. So how can lenders stay ahead of the curve? How can they anticipate the next wave before it hits?


As products and services become more commoditized, customers are looking for personalized experiences. Lenders want a bigger share of customers’ wallets and they want to extend their reach to new customer segments currently outside the formal credit coverage. Customers trust financial institutions with their money and have indicated that they do not mind sharing their personal data as long as it is used responsibly to serve them better. However, in the context of the recent incidents involving some big technology companies, there is growing skepticism regarding responsible handling of personal data. Can banks and other financial institutions leverage technology to turn this into a win-win situation?


Artificial Intelligence (AI) can revolutionize the way banks turn the vast quantities of raw data generated each day into actionable insights to guide interactions with customers. With the increasing pressure from bad loans, banks and NBFCs will need to invest in new technologies, particularly in the area of analytics and AI to lower the cost of acquiring new segments, servicing existing customers and de-risking the portfolio. However, the challenge will be how quickly and effectively, financial institutions can get ready because the digital disruptors might be waiting in the wings.
